On April 25, 2026, the Faculty of Philology and Journalism at Samara National Research University hosted the grand finale of the annual “Silver Lyre of English Poetry”—a cherished competition in spoken word performance in English. Traditionally organized by the Department of English Philology, the event continues to champion the rich legacy of English-language verse and theatrical expression.

This year’s edition marked a special anniversary—the 400th birthday of one of William Shakespeare’s most iconic works—inviting participants to reflect on enduring human themes and the artistry of poetic form.

A total of 36 contestants from 13 educational institutions across Samara took part, competing in two formats: live stage performances and pre-recorded video submissions. The competition spanned four age categories:

    • University students
    • Upper secondary (grades 9–11)
    • Middle school (grades 5–8)
    • Primary level (grades 1–4)

What sets the “Silver Lyre” apart is not just its academic rigor—but its uniquely warm, supportive, and creative atmosphere. Over the years, it has evolved far beyond a mere contest: every performer was met with enthusiastic applause, and the shared emotional energy between stage and audience transformed the hall into a true celebration of the spoken word.

In his opening address, Vyacheslav Shevchenko, Head of the Department of English Philology, Doctor of Philological Sciences, PhD, and Associate Professor, emphasized the event’s deeper significance:

“For many years now, Samara University has proudly opened its doors to these talented, passionate young minds. We’re witnessing a beautiful continuity: our own graduates—now teachers—bring their students here, inspiring them to discover the joy of language and literature. A heartfelt thank you to all educators and parents—your dedication makes this celebration possible. And to our young participants: we sincerely hope to welcome many of you as future students!”

The jury has announced the winners and prize recipients. Full results are available here.

Congratulations to all participants, mentors, and families! May your love for poetry continue to grow—and we eagerly await your return next year!
