Participants of the World Youth Festival proposed a number of international projects

Rector Vladimir Bogatyrev met with volunteers and participants of the World Youth Festival from Samara University. About fifty students and university staff took part in the business and cultural program of the festival, which was held in the federal territory of Sirius. Everyone was selected personally. And it wasn’t easy. For such activity and dedication, the Rector thanked the participants of the WYF: "You became university ambassadors at one of the most significant youth events of this year," Vladimir Bogatyrev noted, recalling that such events are an element of “soft power” in politics, as they broadcast culture, traditions to the outside world, debunk myths and stereotypes about Russia and its citizens.

The Rector stressed that at Samara University, there are about a thousand students from 70 countries. “The task of attracting students from abroad is one of our priorities," Vladimir Bogatyrev reminded the participants of the meeting. – I emphasize that we have a lot to learn. Our University has significant achievements in three international subject rankings – in physics and astronomy, computer science, and aerospace sciences.”

Now the approach to the adaptation of international students has changed. So, if before they were all settled in a separate dormitory, now everything is different – the guys find themselves among Russian-speaking classmates, and they adapt faster in such a friendly and saturated language environment.

The Rector noted that friendship with students from different countries is very beneficial: “Remember that, as a rule, talented guys come to us. For example, there are students who speak not merely two, but seven (!) languages. They are awaited at home, and when they return, they move very quickly up the career ladder in their countries. Agree, it is important to establish contacts with such promising guys right now.”

Ekaterina Kalakutskaya, a participant of the WYF, a student of the Law Institute, says to the University: “Thank you!” The fact is that she managed to collect a rich portfolio of achievements, focusing only on the events in which she participated within the walls of Samara University. Communicating with young people in Sirius, the girl learned that not every university has so many options to prove yourself without leaving your educational institution. “The experience of communicating with foreign delegates turned out to be very important for me as a future specialist in the field of international law,” Ekaterina admitted and added. “It's great that I was able to test my English skills as an interpreter during the meeting between Governor Dmitry Azarov and the Serbian delegation.”

Sofia Chernyakova from the Faculty of Psychology met a colleague from India at the food court. The girls started talking, and it turned out that the methods of teaching psychologists in Russia are interesting to students from other countries. Sofia suggested creating an online club to discuss the methodological features of teaching psychology in different countries. Students from India, Serbia, and Zimbabwe are ready to join the conversation. The Rector proposed to develop such a format of communication in more detail, to involve the Council of Young Scientists and Specialists.

Elizaveta Davydova also shared her impressions of the festival. It turns out that foreigners do not even imagine what a volunteer movement in Russia is! “I realized that broadcasting our experience is in demand in Africa, Asia, and Europe. I propose to organize a round table on this topic. So, the Serbian guys were surprised to learn how our event volunteering is organized,” the girl noted.

Vladimir Bogatyrev suggested going further: organizing a permanent offline conference and holding it every year in different countries. “We used to send students on trips abroad. The 5-100 project was aimed at the development of academic mobility. Students went to scientific conferences. I think that we will find funds to send volunteers on trips,” the Rector said. The proposed idea was supported by the director of the volunteer center of the University, Anna Osipova: “At Samara University, we develop a variety of areas of volunteering, so yes, we can up the ante and organize a conference. We have something to share.”

The proposal of Maria Tsybatova, a specialist at the Center for International Short-term Educational Programs, also seemed interesting. The girl shared her experience of running towards each other, which was held at the World Youth Festival in Sirius. The girl suggested holding something similar at the annual event of Samara University – a celebration of Lukachev Street.

The Rector listened attentively to the students’ suggestions, shared his experience of participating in the World Youth Festival and noted the importance of such large-scale events for the promotion of Samara National Research University outside the Russian Federation.
