A delegation from the University of Houston (USA) made a working visit to Samara State Aerospace University

A discussion of the results of joint researches in the Photonics Laboratory took place during the visit.

The guests from the University of Houston: Professor Metin Akay, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Professor Kirill Larin, Director of the Biomedical Optics Laboratory, gave lectures on modern technologies in the area of the human brain diagnostics and optical coherence tomography, as well as consulted graduate and undergraduate students of the university on Biomedical Engineering.

It is to be recalled, that SSAU cooperation with the University of Houston began in 2011, when the first contract on research in the field of optical coherence tomography (OCT) was signed.
According to Valeriy Zakharov, Head of SSAU Department of Laser and Bioengineering Systems, the work in the field of biomedical engineering were performed both in Houston and in Samara. Last year, a cooperation agreement was extended, and the work results were discussed at the recent meeting.

The main outcome resides in the joint project synergy: Russian and American scientists exchanged the best achievements in the field of biomedical technology. According to Valeriy Zakharov, mutual complementation allows to move on. “Nowadays a person who manages to put into practice the stored knowledge faster wins,” - says Valeriy Zakharov.

The American colleagues from Houston noted the high level of engineering training of SSAU specialists and expressed confidence that the joint education within the walls of the two universities in the long term can give an even bigger effect.

“The effective model of the joint projects implementation in the field of medical bioengineering is a combination of engineering education and modern scientific ideas,” - said Valeriy Zakharov.

For reference

OCT (optical coherence tomography) is a modern non-invasive noncontact study method in the different fields of medicine: gastroenterology, cardiology, urology, dermatology and dentistry. The new technique became most popular in the eye disorders diagnostics.
